Patience Testing Fun
July 03, 2008

Polarity is a very unique game that my entire family has found to be very enjoyable. Although designed for two players, the game also works well for two small teams. The components are very well made, durable and easy to handle. Black and white plastic disks with embedded magnets are the playing pieces used along with a canvas mat playing surface. Polarity is visually attention grabbing as anyone who has witnessed a game can attest. There is something almost magical about seeing disks suspended in a magnetic field and watching pieces move as the fields are disturbed.

The game consists of VERY CAREFULLY balancing and manipulating disks using magnetic fields. A turn consists of placing a disk so one side is held suspended in mid-air by the opposing magnetic force of another piece. The turn ends if another piece is accidentally (or intentionally) moved out of position during placement, or comes into direct contact with another piece. Points are scored by capturing disks in "towers".

The rules that came with the game were sparse and not always clear, but online supplements help clarify legal placement and better define "faults" (movement of or contact with other pieces already on the mat). I highly recommend viewing and downloading the supplemental material. Improved instructions would have brought my rating into the 4.5 or 5 star level.
