My wife and I played Settlers of Catan frequently and always used the expansion. Now we play Cities and Knights of Catan and still always use the 5-6 player original expansion. Why? This gives us lots of room to expand to our hearts' content and play to 20 points! This expansion just adds some additional tiles, cards, and pieces but they are needed. Now we rarely play with more than 4 people because we feel so restricted on what we can do. Although it is was made so that 6 people can play we feel that what this expansion does is make it so that more than 2 people can play comfortably.
A colleague at work spoke so highly about Settlers that I had to buy it. I used to play lots of strategy board games when I was in college and loved the interaction with my playmates. As I got older and upraded to a computer, I only played online games. After a couple of years of this, I felt something missing, interaction with REAL people. Alas, Catan! It's True. I have played it with 8 friends and they all love it so much that weekend marathons are becoming standard. Two friends have bought this game and three are buying it. Some friends and I had a game playing day. We made it through two games, Trivial Pursuit and Nuclear Annihilation, before playing the settlers of Catan. Once we started playing it, we kept playing, trying to implement different strategies. The changing board is an excellent means of varying the players approach to the game. The one thing it could use is an underlying board to place the main board on to make it easier to move.
I've got a large family of six, so this expansion was vital when we all got together for Christmas! It adds to the fun without changing the game much at all.
Besides a bigger playing board and the lovely new colors (green and brown) for the new players, you only add one new rule--you get to build inbetween each player's turn. This helps the game go faster, increases the importance of good trading at all times, and increases competition when two people are trying to build on the same spot.
Let more people in on the fun!
This game is the same as the basic game, with the addition of more tiles and the opportunity to build after EVERY player's turn. This does change the game... it makes it more fun.
You can build roads and block off opponents in the mid game. You get to do something while it is not your turn. However, you can buy development cards just before your turn which is a little silly.
For a few new dimensions to your Settlers games, consider these possibilities... bribe other players into letting you build certain roads with free resource cards or make a non hexagonal map with the expansion pieces.
If you've played the Settlers of Catan base game, then you already know it is a good game. This expansion allows two more players to join in the fun. There are additional tiles to make the island bigger, and a few more resource and development cards to handle the larger number of players. The only rule change is a good one: to compensate for the longer time between a player's turns, everyone is allowed to build after each player's turn. This keeps the game dynamic and fast paced. If you enjoy the base game but would like to add more players, this is the perfect expansion.
I should begin by saying that I give the original 4-player Settlers of Catan a 5-star rating. Its combination of depth and versatility is seldom matched. See the reviews listed with that game for discussion of its many strengths. This review assumes the reader is familiar with the first game.
Given the high quality of the original, I have to give positive reviews to an expansion that adds the opportunity for more players. Before I purchased the expansion, there were a couple times I was disappointed to be unable to show Settlers to a new (5 or 6 person) group of gamers. However, the expansion rates only 4 stars because in adding players it loses some of the balance of the original.
With the game come extra land tiles to form a larger board, a few extra resource and development cards, a new set of distribution numbers and of course two new sets of colored playing pieces.
Only two rule changes are made in the expansion. One is minor, that you are no longer required to finish all trading on your turn before you begin building. The second is more significant: that all players get an opportunity to build on every player's turn, after that turn is complete. This rule was included to keep players occupied between their turns, and to give them the opportunity to get rid of cards from a large hand (more likely with the extra players) before a '7' is rolled and they are wastefully discarded.
There are a couple of flaws in this system. Most importantly, it makes a port strategy less viable, because in the new between-turns building phase, no trading (including maritime trading) is permitted. Also, some of the urgency of decision-making is lost. In the original, you really have to agonize over whether to build that development card now or wait it out until next turn hoping to get the cards for a city. Here, there's little incentive to build roads or development cards until the player just before you finishes his turn.
Despite these criticisms, it certainly is worth buying the expansion if you anticipate your Settlers group often being larger than four people. Even slightly diminished, Settlers still outperforms a lot of other choices.
