Dark clouds gather over the once peaceful landscape. Wild barbarians, lured by Catan's wealth and power, maneuver to attack. Their massive warships loom against the orange horizon.
You must be strong! Barbarians attack the weakest targets, and the victim of their onslaught will be the player who contributes the least to the defense of Catan. Don't take any chances! Field your knights!
In The Cities & Knights of Catan, you engage in the defense of Catan and compete to build the three great metropolises of Catan. Each of these magnificent centers are even more valuable than cities and are safe from the barbarians. You must invest in city improvements, which you acquire using commodities of trade: Coin, Paper, and Cloth. If you improve your culture, muster your knights, and enrich your cities, you will be the master of the great realm of Catan!
This is the 4th edition released in North America and features all new artwork, and an insert tray with space to hold game components from Cities and Knights 5-6 Player Extension.

This expansion to Settlers of Catan is purely amazing! This expansion adds so much more strategy and fun! The flips charts (which replace the development cards) are a very nice touch. The knights and barbarians idea had me questioning it at first. But after I played it, I was hooked.
I currently have:
Settlers of Catan (3rd edition)
Settlers of Catan 5-6 Player Expansion (3rd edition)
Cities and Knights of Catan (3rd edition)
Cities and Knight of Catan 5-6 Player Expansion (3rd edition)
I play this game with my friends and family about 10-15 (maybe even 20) times a year. I highly recommend this game to anyone who likes (or loves!) Settlers of Catan. And, while you're at it, get the 5-6 Player Expansion! It helps a lot. I hope to get Seafarers soon (along with the Seafarers 5-6 Expansion) and Traders and Barbarians of Catan!
This expansion is a must have for seasoned Settlers fans. It brings the game to a whole new and better level. After playing Cities & Knights, basic Catan will feel incomplete.
This expansion adds depth, more options, and so many of the things that you always wanted to do with the basic game but couldn't...
Ever wanted to be able to hold more cards in your hand without discarding on a roll of 7? Now You can with city walls.
Want to have a better way to keep the robber at bay? City walls and knight tokens take care of that!
Wish you could trade at port rates but you couldn't get to the right port? No problem with the Merchant.
Want a better way to attack a player in the lead? Now you can burn their city down, look at their hand and take cards, remove their roads, and more!
Wish the Development Deck had more than just 5 different cards? The new Progress Cards have dozens of new effects!
Want a way to produce resources even when your numbers aren't rolled? Improve your city by buying the Aquaduct and now you can!
Wish you could move the number chips? The Inventor Card lets you swap 2 of them!
And so much more!
A great expansion for an outstanding game. Hands down better than Seafarers (also a good expansion though). And contrary what Vasal claims, Traders & Barbarians in no way make Cities & Knights obsolete. In fact, far from it.
Some people like to trash Cities & Knights. Well, it's not for the occasional Catan player. What did they expect from an expansion - new colors? If you're a Catan buff, then get Cities & Knights :-)
Let me put it this way: in college, my friends and I played Settlers of Catan all the time. Then, one day, one of my friends busted out Cities and Knights. We never played "normal" Settlers again after that.
You can do more, you can screw your opponents over in multiple ways, the game lasts longer, the game is more balanced, there's more strategy and less luck involved, and every resource is valuable until the very end of the game. I have had more fun playing C&K than any other game I've ever touched.
Obviously, this game is not for folks who have never played Settlers before. But once you go C&K, you never go back... until you have to teach new players, in which case you should play 2 games of Settlers as quickly as you can and then start playing C&K again.
Five very enthusiastic stars from me.
