Product Description

How else could the honorable Henry Morgan celebrate his 30 years of governing Jamaica than with a race around the island? Gathering every Pirate and Buccaneer around, the "Great Challenge" will be a memorable race. Not to mention - what's better than a race where you can earn some booty and shoot at your opponents? The ''Great Challenge'', that's what!

The goal is to sail around the island of Jamaica as fast as possible, while gathering the goods required: gold for port taxes, powder for naval battles and food to eat while out on the high seas. Each time the pirates meet, they will have to fight to try and steal the contents of each other's holds (and maybe pawn off a chest full of cursed gold at the same time).

And so, hoist up the sails and head towards Port-Royal. May the fastest and richest win!

Great game, fast play, lots of fun!
February 14, 2012

I purchased this game about 4 months ago and rarely does any one of my family members declines the invitation to play. Never have I owned such a game so "solid" as Jamaica- it has great artwork/design, durable components, and exciting gameplay. What more do you want from a board game??

The design work on this game is very impressive! I have played many other games with great art but I can definitely say that Jamaica's, in my personal opinion, has the best art direction. The style suits the theme very well. Also, the cards lined up side by side correspondently will illustrate a large image which is absolutely stunning!

Componentwise, this game contains the traditional thick cardstock chips and board which are very durable. The wooden dice are very nice and adds to the pirate theme. The soft plastic ship pawns are very well done and very articulately made.

With regards to gameplay, I have no complaints other than the fact that the game is 40% strategy and 60% luck. Its not a huge problem given that the unpredictable nature of the dice roll and the draw pile gives a sense of excitement and encourages the player to think strategically when playing a card from their hand. It may not be a huge challenge for the hardcore gamer but it makes for a great party game to play with friends and family. Give it a shot!

Good Enough for Two
May 26, 2009

I'm always searching for games that are fun for a group but can also work well as a 2-player game. This is one such game - thanks to the 2- player rule variation.

The premise: You are one of six pirates on a race around Jamaica, your goal is to collect the most gold and win the race.

The fun: At each turn you will have to decide what your "morning activity" and what your "evening activity" will be. You could collect more food, collect gunpowder, collect gold coins or move forward/backward -- you could even attack another ship!

Each player gets to hold the golden compass and play captain for a turn. As Captain you'll roll the dice and choose which die will represent the "morning activity" number and the "evening activity" number... if you're playing with 2 players... you'll also get to determine the course of the Ghost Ship!

The surprisingly fun part of this game is that at any point the game can seem to turn upside down and the leader finding themselves trying to stay afloat while the calm and steady ship sails on. Each time you play you only use 9 of the 12 treasure cards which adds a touch of mystery to the game. After all... some of the treasure is cursed!

This game is great for all ages and is relatively quick to play. The rules (while looking extensive and hard to understand) are quite simple and are fun to read through.
