Great fun for all ages
July 01, 2002

This was among a bunch of games I ordered for a summer day camp my kids attend. The camp serves kids just out of kindergarten through 4th grade, and Apples to Apples Jr. has become their new favorite game. The added bonus is that the game is interesting enough that the counselors don't get bored out of their minds playing it for the nth time, and happily jump in to a game whenever the kids request.

Fun for all, no matter what your age
June 07, 2002

I got this for my younger son (age 10) after playing the adult version with my older son (age 20). I wish the store had had the Junior version (ages 9+). We've played this in a mixed group from a 6 year old to a grandmother, and we have lots of fun with it. It won't be boring for the adults and the kids find it fun. The only problem is the vocabulary is a little simple for an all adult game, so you'd be better off getting the adult version if you think you'd be playing this with young adults and adults only.

What would be cool if Out Of The Box made a hybrid with 1/3 of the deck 7+ cards, 1/3 of the deck 9+ cards, and 1/3 of the deck 'adult' cards. That would enable the game to 'grow' with a family.

Very appealing for kids-adults play
November 30, 2001

Im always looking for games for friends and relatives to play and to give as gifts. This one sounded good from the prior review, so I bought it and brought it home for Thanksgiving. By the way, games make wonderful hostess/housewarming gifts!

Everyone picks 4 cards (we played with 5) from the red deck--one might say 'star' or 'bee'--and then one green descriptor card is picked for all to match the best that they can. It may say 'small' or 'stinky', for example. Each player makes a choice and submits it to the judge, who shuffles the cards and then selects the best card in his or her opinion. Players alternate as judge. The results can be hilarious and creative!

The kids (5 years old on up) and we adults ALL had LOTS of fun! It takes the right kind of thinking for kids: not a brain drain, but it allows them to make a choice and voice an opinion with their selection. And you dont have to play down to even young kids; try your hardest, because the kids are on equal footing.

Unlike what the rules allow, we didnt let players promote why their card was the best: the siblings wouldnt rule in favor of a sisters card! Keeping the cards 'secret' forced the judges impartiality and didnt hurt the gameplay at all.

My nieces and nephews loved it. We must have played 6 times, so you know its fun. First thing next day, my nieces talked me into playing again.

This is an enjoyable excuse for kids-adult interaction, so you cant go wrong. Im anxious to try the grownups version sometime.
