Hans van Tol's Rotterdam debuted at Spiel 07, and while the gloss on the game hinted at a complex shipping-and-goods-delivery game, in reality many players felt that tossing their goods on open water gave them a better chance of seeing them reach the right destination than if they relied on the forced movement of the game ships.
Rotterdam: Masters of Trade seems to take the components from the base game as a starting point and build a related, but new experience that fits into the worker placement trend of recent years. Players now receive a trio of dock workers who are placed each turn on a harbor planning board that allows you to build factories and profit from the delivery of raw materials, buy or sell goods on a new open product market, compete over the open products at each harbor (unlike the closed cards from the base game that left you whiffing on deliveries half the time), fight for open shipping assignments, and have more control over where your ship travels.
