Each player takes the role of a nation investigating a nefarious ocean phenomenon, building research stations and setting out with ships to take water samples, marking the researched infected waters with buoys, and tracing the wrongness back to the swarm queen. Whales, tsunamis and other dangers await you in the waters -- not to mention the efforts of other nations, who will apparently threaten the end of life as we know it in order to claim credit for solving the problem.
Players score points based on the size and breadth of their compound at the end of 3-4 rounds (depending on the number of players) as well as at the end of the game. Within each round, action cards are shuffled and laid out, with players taking actions in the order dealt unless they want to pay research points (i.e. VPs) in order to take an action that lies later in the round. The possible actions include launching and sailing ships (to scoop up swarm tiles from the water), building research stations (which come loaded with a researcher), mark tiles with buoys, and siccing bad things on opponents, such as whales and cancer.
