Die Siedler von Catan: Deutschland Edition is being released to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany and the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.
With that background information in mind, here's a look at how this version of Siedler differs from the dozen-plus other versions that have graced the market: In Die Siedler von Catan: Deutschland Edition, players are constructing the Germany country as it exists in modern times, even going so far as to rebuild the Cologne Cathedral, Brandenburg Gate in Berlin and ten other well-known German landmarks, with miniature reproductions of these monuments and a specific location for each one of them on the gameboard.
Each player starts the game with three town halls on the board, town halls replacing the settlements of basic Settlers; each town hall is worth one victory point, and it provides raw materials in the expected way. In addition to building new town halls, which cost one of each resource, players can build roads and the aforementioned landmark buildings, which cost two ore and a grain. The monuments provide 1 vp and a one-time bonus rather than a constant supply of raw materials.
Building follows different rules in Deutschland, with town halls going up only in designated locations that are not necessarily two road lengths apart. These town halls can't be upgraded with a monument as those unique buildings can be erected only in the appropriate marked locations. The monuments are spread throughout the countryside to ensure balanced building and provide plenty of opportunities for publicity in German newspapers.
