In Bridge Troll, you and your friends are hideous trolls who each guard a troll bridge. Each turn, you throw boulders to bid for travelers, who vary in number depending on the weather for that day.
Travelers include fat merchants, pilgrims, poor monks (who make good eating), and if you are lucky, royal personages. As travelers come to your bridge, you use them to collect tolls. But watch out! Knights, bandits, dragons, and vicious Billy Goats Gruff prowl the countryside. You'll have to use some of your boulders to chase them away (which means you'll have fewer left to use on your bridge!).
Although you need to collect tolls from travelers so you can buy building supplies, working on your bridge makes you hungry, so you will have to eat some of your travelers instead. It is important to balance tolls with food in order to make your bridge very appealing to travelers. If you eat too many travelers or just collect money, you won't be able to fix up your bridge. The player who uses toll-money, food, and boulders to build the most impressive troll bridge operation wins the game.

Bridge Troll is a new game just recently released by Z-man, and designed by Alf Seegert. When I first read about the game, the theme immediately caught my attention and I knew I had to get the game. After a couple months wait, I finally got it! I dont write reviews, so bear with me. I only chose to write this since there still isnt any posted, and i thought some ppl might be wondering about it.
Well done in my opinion. You get 6 troll player boards. Mine were slightly curved, but not a big deal. Nice standard little wooden cubes, good quality cardboard chips. A plastic dice with weather stickers, and the stack of cards seems decent enough quality as well. I sleeved mine right away though..(euro sized) The box is sturdy, and the rules are well done with lots of examples. I didnt have any problems figuring out how to play.
Rules Summary: (I wont go over every little detail, but just most of the basics)
The game supports 3 to 6 people, where each player gets to live out their dream of discovering what it is like to live their life as a dirty smelly troll. You each have a cruddy little bridge, and you want to try to renovate yours to be the nicest, biggest, most beautiful home in the land.
Lets have a brief look at the flow of the game, shall we?
Each player begins the game with 6 boulders in their colour. Boulders are used primarily for bidding. At the start of each turn, a 6 sided dice is rolled, determing how nice the weather is that day. If it is sunny, many pilgrims, and travelles and merchants are out and about, taking an afternoon stroll, maybe peddling some wares, or making a diplomatic trip to a neighbouring kingdom. However, its it stormy, travellers are less inclined to leave their homes. Depending on the number of players, and what type of weather is rolled, between 3 and 7 travellers will be roaming the countryside. The traveller cards are revealed, (one is face down, its identity unknown) and then everyone secretly puts any number of their boulders into their hand, and they reveal. Anyone who bid at least 1 boulder, will get at least one card. The highest bidder will have first pick of which traveller will visit his bridge today. (note: players can only bid with a single colour of boulder)
Starting with the winning bidder, players take turns choosing a traveler card. You must then decide what to use the card for. You can eat it for food (bridge building makes you hungry!) Or you can hold them ransom for income (building materials dont buy themselves you know). You choose which type of resource to use the card for when you take it, and it goes next to your bridge. You may also end up with one of 2 other types of cards:
Special cards are travelers who usually are of some profession, like a fortune teller or a jester. When you capture them, they beg and plead to be let go!!! In return they offer their services, you agree. You put the card into your hand, and can use it later on, when you see fit. A fortune teller lets you peek at the face down traveler card to see if it is worth taking. A royal messenger grants you access to high valued royalty travelers, like princesses and dukes. But of course...you are a troll, and can't be trusted..so after you use their help, you get to eat or ransom them anyway!
The other type of card you may get is a hazard card...these are bad, and can really put a damper on your bridge building plans. Things like bandits, knights, and dragons... You must use your boulders to chase them away, giving you less to use next bidding round. Luckily you can get more boulders. Remember that shmuck who didnt bid anything last round? Well his bridge is closed, and no one visits him today. But since he didnt have to worry about watching for villagers, he was able to go out and collect more boulders to use.
Players now get back boulders that were used for bidding. Beginning with the last player that round, each takes the bid boulders from any player (inlcuding himself).
Lastly you have the option to upgrade your bridge! You can trade your resources for points, improving the condition of your bridge. You must use a food card and a coin card in order to do this, giving you points equal to the lesser value of the 2 travellers used. (example: a 4 food card, with a 3 coin card, will give you 3 points) There is also a stack of bridge upgrade cards valued 1-15. Cards may also be traded in for these for more points for your bridge. Decorations, mounted heads, christmas tree lights, family photos..anything that makes your bridge more attractive!
Ending the game:
The game ends once no more traveler cards can be drawn. The game is immediately over, without a final scoring/upgrade phase, so its important to cash in cards before the traveler deck is going to run out. All players reveal their scoring chips, and the troll with the most points wins!!!
I found the game quite enjoyable. It doesnt take too long to play, but also isnt over in such a hurry that you barely got going. It can be played easily by non gamers, or BGgeeks. It wont give you a deep strategic experience, but I doubt anyone is expecting that. There is randomness in what weather is rolled, and what cards come up, but it affects everyone equally. So one player cant get screwed over by "rolling a 1, three turns in a row" or anything like that. The victor will be decided by who really did play the best game with the bidding of boulders, and picking of cards, and when and which to upgrade. The price is good, and it seems to be selling out all over the place.
The art is cartoony, silly, and fun, and perfect for the theme. The theme really drew me to the game, and it doesnt disappoint. I must say, its very fun being a troll
