As starting time for the race draws near, six colorful yachts mill around the starting line. Each skipper maneuvers to gain the best position when the gun goes off. They begin to draw together. Sheets are trimmed, speed picks up, and... BANG! The starting gun has fired, and the race is on!
This could be any one of a thousand sailboat races held all over the world every year, but it isn't. This is Regatta, the exciting Sports Illustrated game of championship sailing. In Regatta, you make all of the decisions a true racing skipper has to make. You plan a pre-race strategy that will bring you across the line first. You decide when to tack, and when to put up your powerful spinnaker for the downwind leg. You try to take advantage of unexpected wind shifts, blanket your opponents' sails, and much more -- in fact, Regatta is so close to real sailboat racing that it is highly recommended for training beginners and even experienced sailors in tactics and racing strategy.
Regatta is playable by 2-6 people, on a full-color, mounted mapboard. Four moveable buoys and one committee boat marker allow for an infinite variety of course designs, from traditional triangular courses to the special courses designed for Americas's Cup competition.
All the facets of real sailboat racing are included in Regatta, including puffs, wind shifts, spinnakers, blanketing, right-of-way, tacking, jibing, and race scoring. And for neophyte sailors, there's a helpful summary of the rules of yacht racing, along with a nautical glossary listing the most common terms used by sailors.
