There are games that on the surface, seem so simple and elegant, you think that there's no way that there can be any depth to it. That is not the case with Balance of Power.
The concept behind the game is simple. There are three different pieces; king, general and banker. Battle is simple. Kings beat bankers, bankers beat generals and Generals beat Kings. Yes, the traditional "scissors/paper/rock" dynamic. On your turn, you get to perform one king function, one general function and one banker function. Again, simple as pie. Those actions? Move into an adjacent territory, Battle a foe in the territory that you're in, or replicate oneself. Ever nation has 9 "home" territories and if, at the start of your turn, you are the sole possessor of all 9 territories, you get one additional action (can be a general, king or banker action). Simple. Victory happens when someone achieves the predetermined number of points. Points are garnered by holding a territory soley (1 pt each) and if a king, banker and general are in a capital (4 pts).
The pieces are wooden and very nice. The mapboard is colorful and large enough for what it does. There are no bonus' for the different countries, everyone is on equal footing.
Gameplay moves along rather quickly and smoothly. No need for analysis paralysis here. You're done in about an hour, so the game doesn't overstay its welcome. And for the money, it's a good bargain.
Good bits, good gameplay, a good time. Isn't that what a boardgame is supposed to be? It doesn't re-invent the wheel, but so what? This wheel rolls along just fine, thank you.
