Macao, the mysterious harbor city on the south coast of China, is the Portuguese trading center in the far east at the end of the 17th century.
The players take on the roles of the energetic adventurers who sought their fortunes in Macao. Whether as captain or governor, as craftsman or scholar, numerous exciting functions are offered the players. Who will use his various possible actions the wisest? Who will have the best plan and can acquire the most prestige by the end of the game?
We were looking for something new to play after what seemed like a long run of playing good ol' Traders of Genoa. Having the whole Alea collection at our disposal, something about this game struck our eye and we decided to break the shrinkwrap and try it out. I am glad that we did.
We have only played it twice, but both times have been a good experience. Game play can get a little slow when people decide which cards they want to get to place on their boards, but even then, it isn't terrible. There are a number of different things to do on each turn, and depending on what you do early in the game, can help a little or a lot later on.
From buying goods, sailing ships to deliver those goods, collecting cards representing buildings, people, etc, to planning on what resources you need from the random dice rolls, there is a lot to think about in this game.
If I could change anything in this game, it would really come down to the storage. With 300 tiny colored blocks, a plethora of tiles, 6 dice, 4 ships, and some wood discs, there is a lot to store and only 1 small baggie is provided. Otherwise, it is a great game with lots to do. I would put it higher than a party game of course, a little more than even a light strategy game, but less than an all out, cut throat strategy game. For us playing as a family, it fits nicely.
