This title is one of two winners of a 2008 competition held by Spielmaterial.de to reuse the pieces from the old Kosmos game Giganten, as Spielmaterial had apparently purchased a huge quantity of these bits. Schwarzes Gold is a family game that includes a double-sided gameboard and a half-dozen variants to juice the game in various ways.
The base game is a simple one: Each player starts with 4-5 oil rigs and a truck in a single color, and a supply of black tokens for oil storage are placed in a common area along with three barrels. In the first phase of the game, players take turns rolling a pair of dice, then placing one item -- oil rig, truck, token or barrel – onto a space on the gameboard in the region that matches the number you rolled. (If you don't like your first roll, you can roll again, but you must stick with that number.) Once one region is filled or all sixty tokens are placed on the board, the game moves to phase two. Players take turns -- going first clockwise, then counter-clockwise, then back - selecting either their truck or one of their oil rigs. Select an oil rig, and you claim all tokens and barrels in the eight adjacent spaces; select your truck, and you claim all tokens and barrels in a straight line from your truck. Whoever scores more points wins.
