Precious stones are on offer at the magnificent sultan's palace. The players have to get hold of the most precious collection of all if they want to impress the sultan and win the game.
But who can foresee the plans of the other players and make the right bid at the right time? Only the best players can call the bluff.
The world can never have enough card game fillers with shiny gems and blind bidding, right? Well that's what I think, and Sultan is another solid game that belongs in this category. And perhaps best of all, it's a bidding game that works particularly well for 2-3 players! And it also works just fine with 4-5 players.
Sultan originated as a Brazilian game, and was first produced by Estrela under the name "Riquezas do Sultão", and to this day it still seems to have an enthusiastic following of Brazilian fans. Phalanx Games announced plans to release it in Spring 2008, and when this was cancelled, Queen Games picked it up for release at Nürnberg 2009, evidently deeming it as perfectly suited for their line-up of family style games.
In Sultan, players are trying to acquire point-scoring jewels by means of secret and simultaneous auctions, which they participate in by playing from the set of cards numbered 1-15 which each player has. Different gems are worth different points, so some are going to be more valuable. But you can also score bonus points by collecting sets of the same coloured gems, so the less valuable gems can quickly rack up points if collected in large numbers. The card-play has a strong element of bluffing, as you try to outguess your opponent's choices. Do you have what it takes to make the best collection and win the Sultan's favour?
If you're looking for something light and easy, that's suitable as a quick game to introduce to family or non-gamers, with attractive components, and don't mind the blind bidding mechanic, then Sultan fits the bill rather well! To have a filler that meets these criteria and works well with just 2-3 players and has a very strong bluffing element is quite rare, so if these are the things you enjoy in a game, you might want to consider picking this up.
