Breaking tradition, German publisher DDD Verlag will not publish a new game from the design team of Hanno and Wilfried Kuhn at Spiel 2010. Instead the publisher will present the debut design from Christoph Bauer, 1655 – Habemus Papam, a design the publisher claims to be still playing with enthusiasm after more than a hundred test playings.
As you might have deciphered from the title, players are involved with the selection of a new Pope in 1655 following the death of Pope Innocent X. More specifically, each player wants to be the next Pope, so they'll need to figure out how to get the votes to make it happen. Here's the back cover blurb from the publisher:
Rome, 1655 anno domini. An announcement shocks the whole of Christendom – Pope Innocent X is dead. With lightning speed cardinals travel to Rome, center of religious power and intrigue. The suspense is palpable when the players in their role as Preferiti – the most likely candidates to ascend the Holy See – try to gain as many votes as possible, using bribery, beguilement and tactical calculation. In the end, only the cardinal with both all the votes money could buy and a proven mastery on the political stage will be elected Pope. One thing is for certain – once the white smoke rises, it will be declared: "Habemus Papam!"
