In the game listing on his website, designer Bruno Faidutti notes that The Dwarven King (aka Le Roi des Nains) is the first trick-taking game that's he designed in his two decades in the industry. As for the game play, he says, "It's called The Dwarven King because it's loosely based on Barbu – the bearded one – a traditional French trick-taking game, somewhat similar with the Queen of Spades. The Dwarven King is a chaotic trick-taking game with lots of dwarves, knights and goblins, and from time to time a wizard, troll or dragon."
