The games coming from UK publisher Surprised Stare Games over the years have been varied in genre, box and graphic design: Alan Paull's heavily interconnected and classic-looking Confucius, Tony Boydell's kitschy auction card game Fzzzt!, and so on. Surprised Stare's 2010 release, scheduled to debut at Spiel in October in a limited edition of 500 copies, fits this non-pattern pattern.
Tony Boydell's Totemo is a 3D stacking game with giant chunky wood bits – or at least that's what the playtest version has. (I played a version in 2008 at the UK Games Expo, but I haven't seen the final version.) Here's a game description from the publisher:
Players place custom-designed blocks onto a wooden game board to construct totem poles, scoring victory points along the way. Blocks must be placed according to their colour and the colours of the blocks they touch in three dimensions – for example, a purple block may only be placed adjacent to purple, red or blue blocks. Bonus placements and scoring are possible if you land exactly on special spaces on the score track.
