London lies devastated after the Great Fire of 1666. This is your opportunity to build a new city on the ashes of the old. It is up to you how you employ the talents of the people of London to this end. Will you favour the business classes, who will earn you money? Or would you prefer to spend more money than you can rightly afford on grand monuments and sumptuous palaces? You must also deal with the problem of rising poverty and how to employ the many paupers of the city. Throughout the game you will be forced to make tough decisions. To achieve one aim you must sacrifice another, which may open an opportunity for a competitor.
Almost 250 years of the city's history is recreated in this game. Many of the most famous buildings and monuments are captured in detail on illustrated cards. These elements are presented in a relatively simple game that can be played easily within ninety minutes.

Designed by Martin Wallace, one of the best designers in modern board gaming, London is a terrific 2-4 player game that tells the story of the rebuilding of the city of London after the Great Fire of 1666. It's a superb example of a contemporary strategy game that rewards skillful choices, without becoming bogged down by excessive complexity.
London is ultimately a card driven game, in which you rebuild various boroughs of the city, and populate them with some of the landmarks and buildings that London is still famous for today - all beautifully portrayed on attractive cards. All the while, however, you're going to have to balance your desire to build majestic boroughs with the tough challenges of finance, overcrowding and poverty. It's this wonderful blend of simultaneously managing your money, your victory points, and your poverty points, while at the same time exercising clever hand management, that makes the game so superb. The player who most successfully walks the tightrope created by these various tensions, will earn the most points at the end of the game, and be declared the winner.
Sound good? Oh it is - the heights of euro-gaming goodness type good - as much as that's possible in a card game! The simple rules of London make it quick to teach, and means its possible for new players to be up and running in no time. Yet despite the readily accessible rule-set, there is a real level of skill involved in playing the game well. It plays cleanly and smoothly, and proves eminently satisfying even after many plays - in fact it becomes arguably more challenging, enjoyable, and rewarding after multiple games, when you discover different strategies to pursue based on the cards that you draw and buildings that you choose to build.
If you are interested in a game that is card driven, elegant, and offers subtle yet important player interaction, while retaining genuinely tense decision making - then London might just be what you're looking for! Highly recommended, and one of the absolute best strategy games to emerge from 2010!
