Mage Wars is simply beyond words. I am blown away by this title.
Mage Wars, as the box states, is a "customizable strategy game of dueling mages".
You choose from four mages (Beastmaster, Warlock, Priestess, Wizard), and you design a spellbook based on that mage's specialties. This spellbook (yes this game actually comes with two spellbooks) is compiled of dozens of cards, which you choose from the base set. These cards make up a variety of spells, creatures, walls, towers, gates, etc.
Once you and your rival mage have created their spellbooks to their liking, the duel begins.
The duel takes place on a large board that has the look and feel of an ancient battle arena consisting of bloodied corpses and body parts. Each mage places his mage card on the board and then begins summoning spells and creatures each turn, moving them around the board like miniatures wargame.
There is, of course, so so much more to this game (casting phases, quickcasts, fullcasts, status effects, movement rules, MP channeling, etc) that I just don't have the time to go into right now. Trust me, it would make this review waaaay to long, and your time would be better spent just buying the game because it's what you're going to do after you read this anyway.
To put it plainly, this game is very complex and requires a deep amount of strategy in order to succeed. It has elements that feel like Magic The Gathering, but it is so much more strategic in that you have to focus on movement as well.
Games can take anywhere from one hour to even four and a half hours! (Yes, I had a game last that long, but my buddy and I are very strategy focused so it took that long for me to finally get the better of him).
The main focus of the game is simple. Kill the other mage. Yes, you will be killing monsters along the way as well, but it is important to never forget that the rival mage is the number one priority.
Combat comes down to various factors labelled on each monsters card, and the roll of the custom dice included in the box.
Each character has a character card, which consists of HP, MP and Channeling. This card is on thick, high quality stock and the markers used to indicate your status are all made of wood, which is a nice touch.
The artwork and card quality is stellar to say the least.
The best thing about this game is simply the sheer variety of options you have at your disposal, and this is just the base set! From what I hear, the expansions only make it better. Additionally, the fact that very little is left to chance, means that this is about as pure as a strategy game can get. If you are a superious strategist over your rival then you will likely win. The game is that balanced.
Talking about this game is driving me nuts, I am going to go play it now.
I apologize if this review is a bit scattered, but this game is almost too good to review.
Just go buy it right now.
