Werewolves celebrate 10 years of success! To celebrate this anniversary, “Lui-même” editions and the authors of Philippe des Pallières and Hervé Marly have concocted a special limited edition of this mythical game. For those who are new to the game, the goal is for the Werewolves to devour the townspeople at night and to conceal their identity during the day. However, the Werewolves need to take care as there are 11 special characters who have special talents that are determined to unmask them with the help of the villagers! The game includes 29 sturdy cardboard cards - including a “scapegoat” card to give players somebody to blame all mishaps on. This Special Edition includes high quality game cards, a refreshed design, five of the characters from Werewolves New Moon and new illustrations. And a neat Sheriff’s Badge with a black cord to tie around the neck of the proudly elected official!

I've had this game for a couple years now (during which I've moved cities several times), and have played it with many groups of people - it has consistently been a hit. I first played in university with other late teens/early twenties. There were periods of time when we got together to play a couple times a week, and of course played several games in a row. Tonight, I just introduced it to a new group of classmates (new program, new university), and we had a blast - playing it 7 times in a row and stopping only because it was getting quite late.
My point? This game has proven to have great universality and replay ability. It can be explained and learned quickly (especially when the more simple cards are used in the first game), and built on after that. The gameplay changes enough from game to game that it remains interesting and the puzzle of discovering who is who is maintained. It is, of course, fun to try to bluff your friends and strategize (I've even seen werewolves kill themselves in order to place suspicion on certain people). I've had a lot of success with this game, and it's great for getting conversation going.
Having said that, I've found that there are some conditions that it doesn't work as well - It really doesn't work with fewer than 8 players, and it's important that the moderator (narrator) be familiar enough with the game to keep it running smoothly and also give some "ambiance" to the story. However, don't let that deter you - after playing a game or two, most people feel ready to try being the moderator, so it's a small learning curve, and the instructions that come with the cards are very clear and give a "walkthrough" of the dialogue.
Again, overall, I can't say just how pleased I am with this game. It has tremendous value (I'm sure I have played it over 100 times, providing hours of fun and social interaction), and is a great large group game (while many board games tend to cap off around 4 or 5 players). The theme is variable enough to keep it interesting from game to game, and I'm always pleasantly surprised at how well-received it is by new groups.
The Werewolves of Miller's Hollow is a very simple game (exactly the same as "Mafia") but it is blast to play. All the players are the residents of a village beseiged by werewolves. At night, the werewolves kill one player. During the daytime, the villagers debate and decide to lynch one player. The game ends when the villagers have eliminated all the werewolves or vice versa. Each player is given a card at the beginning of the game which tells your true identity, so you never know who is friend or who is foe.

I had a bunch of friends over at my apartment last weekend. Most of them came to play poker and drink. But I said, "I know you will probably hate this, but I'm going to make you play one game of 'Werewolves.'" I had just received the game in the mail that day, and was anxious to play. After figuring things out in a quick first game, we played a second game and had a lot of fun. Then my friends started calling other people in the apartment complex to come over and play the game. We ended up playing for about three hours straight.
Buy this game, and get the expansion pack, too, which has some great suggestions for variants. You'll have hours of fun, guaranteed.
This was the most played (and well-liked) game at the 2007 Mensa Annual Gathering. Participants of all age ranges kept coming back for additional sessions throughout the week. Creating your own characters also adds to the experience - in some games, one of the Villagers was a Wizard who could reassign 2 players' seats in the night. Quite funny when the Werewolves accidentally kill one of their own, or the Witch poisons herself...

This is a great game. I love playing this with our game group. We have such a good time and I'm usually laughing during and even after being killed. :) True, you can play the game with a regular deck of cards but for me a deck like this adds to the flavor of the game. Also, it's really not that expensive. I for one would rather be dealt a wolf face than a jack of hearts to signify a wolf. It just adds to the role play.
I was first exposed to this on a recent volleyball tournament trip where parents and a group of nine upper-teenage girls killed 3 hours in an airport playing this. While it is true once you know the rules you could work it without any special props, this set is nice, and the game was the most fun game I've ever played for a large group. Make sure you have a good moderator though as that person really sets the tone of the game. If you do lots of things like parties, sleepovers, etc this game is really worth it.
This is the perfect game for a party or gathering. Everyone enjoys, it's incredibly exciting, and really easy to play! Once you start, you'll want to play all night!
Me and my friends get together and play this game on a regular basis. This game is extremely strategic and requires an amazing poker face. You will have to vote to kill your friends, and sometimes be killed arbitrarily. You will soon view all of your friends with a distrustful eye, a must buy for anyone who has 8 - 18 people in their living room.

Everything you could wish for in a family/party game.
Easy to learn - I read the game rules in a few minutes and then taught it to about 12 family members in one practice game with just werewolves and villagers (I actually explained the rules as we played). From there, we added new characters incrementally.
Interactive - Everyone (for us, ages 10-75) is laughing, talking, accusing, denying, bluffing . . . It's everyone's turn, all the time. Even if you are "killed" and removed from the game, it's still fun to guess who the werewolves are.
Fun - This is a fun game for everyone, kids and adults, even non-gamers. So much fun, in fact, that the fun of playing far overshadows winning/losing. The first time we brought it out, the group played for 3 hours straight until, reluctantly, we stopped because it was time for bed. For my 12- and 13-year-old nephews, this has simply become "The Game", as in "Can we please play The Game?"
Flexible - You can play with groups of 8-18, around a table or sitting in a living room. There's no board or pieces (other than 1 card per player), nothing to set up, so it's fast to start playing and people can be sitting on opposite sides of a room.
I agree with other reviewers that although you don't get much for your money (some cards in a small box, plus a rule book), it's worth it, because the cards add to the atmosphere.
I would have liked to have seen a higher-quality card stock (the kids get excited and mash the cards), hence the 4.5 stars instead of 5. Our solution to mashed cards was to buy another set. Really, getting this game is a no-brainer. We're eagerly looking forward to receiving the expansion.
There are other werewolf- or mafia-themed games out there, and I can't say how they compare to this set. However, I was very happy with this version and see no reason to shop around.
I've played this with gamers and non-gamers, and each time everyone has had a great time! The key is a good "storyteller". Whoever guides the game needs a certain knack for literary flourish, but beyond that, the rules are simple and the intrigue enough to keep everyone interested. Make sure to play with at least 8 people or it doesn't work.
I have a group of friends that plays this game with a regular deck of cards. The problem is that there is no information to base your first decision upon, which means one player will get randomly chosen, and kicked out of the game before they have had a chance to play. I have had that happen to me on two different occasions, which means I had to sit and do nothing while others played a game. One of the games lasted over an hour!
This alone is enough to make me stay clear of this game and all versions of it. The only thing this version has going for it is nice pictures.
