Product Description

Ascension: Rise of Vigil is the newest chapter in the popular Ascension deck-building series. Rise of Vigil is both a standalone game playable on its own with 1-4 players and an expansion that can be combined with any of the earlier sets to support up to six players.

As with other Ascension titles, Rise of Vigil is a deck-building game in which players acquire cards from a central pool to add to their decks for use later; at the same time, they also combat creatures and other things that show up in that shared space. Both cards acquired and creatures defeated earn a player points.

Introduced in Ascension: Rise of Vigil are all new Treasure cards which will unlock powerful Energize abilities for the all new Heroes and Constructs.

An amazing expansion to an already stellar deckbuilding game.
October 16, 2013

Ascension has been around for some time now. It is no for being quick and easy to pick up, even for none gamers, but over the years it has continuously rewarded card game enthusiests by adding an increasing amount of depth with each expansion.

Rise of the Vigil is a stand-alone expansion, which can be played by itself or in combination with other Ascension titles. This follows the pattern of Storm of Souls, adding new elements to the game without changing the bones that make Ascension the award winning title that it is.

In this case, the new elements are energy shards, which are used to unleash special "energize" abilities with constructs and heroes alike. For example, a hero card may give you the option to gain 3 honor points if you have enough energy shards at that given time.

The cool thing about this new form of currency is that it is not spent across cards each turn. Rather, if you have four energy shards you can activate any and all energize abilities you have on the table at that time. What this means is that if you have, let's say, two constructs on the table that both have their own energize ability, and each one requires four energy shards, all you need is four energy shards. Basically that number symbolizes the amount you need to have in your possession and it does not subtract from that number. Of course, you cant save up energy between turns because that would just make the game unbalanced.

This new element adds a lot of depth to an already strategic game, and it opens up several opportunities each game for very difficult decisions.

Of course, this is still the same great card game, and it is as addictive as ever.

So where should you start with Ascension if you are new to the game?

I would start right here at Rise of Vigil.

I really enjoyed Storm of Souls because of the complexity it added to the game, but it sometimes diminishes the fast-paced gameplay that makes Ascension so addicting. Rise of Vigil mitigates this issue, adding depth, but not at the cost of losing the fast-pace, often frantic gameplay.

Simply put, I love this game. It is fun solo, and it is fun with your friends. On top of that, the components are high-quality and the asking price is perfect.

Buy this now.

5 out of 5 stars.
