Great components, interesting mechanics,okay game
November 10, 2015

I've only played this once, so take that for what it's worth. First off, this is beautifully designed. The components are very nice and the quarry feature that you construct and that is part of the game board is very cool. Basically you acquire money in order to procure rocks which you quarry by shoving them down a track full of discs; the rocks/discs that fall off the end are used to trade in for finished slabs/pavers that you can then use to construct your road (or via, if you prefer to speak Latin). Once the road is built, you can then move your meeple down the road, for there are bonuses available to the player who reaches each of the three cities along the Appian Way first. However there are also bonuses for building the majority of the road, broken into the 3 sections between each city. Balancing when to quarry, when to build and when to move makes up the bulk of the game play. The quarry action left a bit too much up to chance for my taste and can result in one player getting punished because the wrong sized rocks fell off the back end of the quarry. It's fun but just fell a little flat for me compared to other games out there. Worth a look but not one I'll be itching to play on a regular basis.
