The ancient evil known as Doom has decided to make a change. In this new world of Numenera, Doom has manifested as an intelligent virus that controls its hosts. The infected are known as "Doomladen" and they know each other regardless of a host's external form. They are lead by powerful beings with strange relics – the Thunderstones – and once again you must defeat them to save the world.
In the deck-building game Thunderstone Advance: Numenera, which can be played on its own or combined with other Thunderstone sets, you build a party of heroes to defeat the Thunderstone Bearers. The "Doomladen" mechanism introduced in this game unites various monster groups against you, and new Setting cards take you into the environment of Monte Cook's Numenera RPG.

I am new to Thunderstone Advance, and I am fairly new to the deckbuilding genre. I'm also no very familiar with Monte Cook's Numenera RPG and the vast and interesting world it takes place in.
Therefore, this review is from the perspective of someone who cannot compare this stand-alone expansion to previous entries.
Thunderstone Advance is a deckbuilding dungeon-crawler in which you and your friends building a deck of heroes, weapons, village folk, spells, and items in order to delve into the dungeon to defeat monsters, obtain Thunderstone Shards and ultimately defeat the "Guardian" of the dungeon. You win the game by adding up victory points at the end, which are gained from killing monsters and from obtaining certain cards to your deck.
A nice touch is the fact that you can level up your heroes as you gain experience from fighting monsters, make your hand that much more potent against the "Guardian".
There are a lot of rules to this game that I just don't have time to go into here, but each rule makes sense and fits the overall theme of the game. In fact, theme is something Thunderstone Advance Numenera knocks out of the park. The game is simply oozing with it! And what a theme this one is!
Numenera is such an interesting setting, both futuristic and primitive all at once. The beautiful artwork on the cards helps to paint of picture of what your heroes look like and what your heroes can see and feel as you delve deeper into the dungeon. I've only got two games under my belt right now, but I cant wait to discover more about this amazing setting and the creatures and heroes who inhabit it.
Another very nice thing about this game is that it can be played solo, which we all know is nice for when you cant get a game night together. Solo play is surpisingly as engrossing as multiplayer! You're basically playing against the monsters, comparing your victory point total to the monster total at the end of the game.
There are also settings that can be used to change certain parts in the game, as well as scenarios, not to mention tons of variants online.
This title can be played solo and can also be combined with previous entries in this amazing franchise, although, I'm not sure I am going to go backwards with this one simply because the theme is so different than the games that have come before it.
One last bit I want to bring up is the component quality. The quality is top notch from the card quality to the quality of the box and the options given to organize the 602 cards that come packed in this box. Amazingly high quality components.
I really like this game if you cannot tell. If you like deckbuilders, RPG's, or just card games in genera then you will like this.
I give it my highest recommendation.
