With this expansion, the players have new possibilities of strengthening their influence in the area around Carcassonne. Now traveling merchants transport their goods to surrounding cities and monasteries. The cities in the surrounding countryside can increase to a size large enough to elect their own mayors. Simple farmers build large and wealthy farms and the church tries to strengthen their influence by establishing abbeys.
My girlfriend and i bought this expansion today and immediately started playing it. There are a few new additions, the abbey, the mayor, the wagon and the barns. We found the barns to be quite confusing and just add to the farming system and how confusing that can get.
One surprise however, was the Abbey. I found this to be quite an interesting little piece that adds a new element to the game. The Abby can be placed anywhere on the map as long as it is surrounded on the four corners, (not diagonals). This allows you to finish those pesky cities that just wont get finished.
They mayor and the wagon are both useful however they do not change the game too much. All in all i found this expansion worth the money as it does add some new exciting elements to the game, but definitely not necessary.
This is latest in a line of many expansions for this wonderful game of civil engineering and castle building. In this major expansion set we get new mechanics, new meeples!, and new strategies!!!!
This expansion really gives you your money's worth. First of all I have to give the casual player one caveat for this series. It's up to like 7 official expansions both minor and major, it has 6 or maybe it's 7 spin-offs, and the parent game that started it all has the most of everything, therefore I suggest you start small, buy the basic version, then after a while start on the expansions. There are so many new rules, meeples, expansions, and what not that if you played all of the rules and used all of the meeples from all expansions you're looking at a game that could potentially last 3 hours!!!! That's ok if you like that long of a game, but you really should slowly build up to that level. You don't want to overwhelm yourself at the beginning, with that said you'll also need this caveat as well. Don't get this expansion until you've had a chance to get ALL the others first, even though this is by far the best of the bunch (of the expansions that is).
This expansion gives us 3 new meeples, the Mayor (we call him the Pantalones guy because he's got on "big pants"), the Cart and the Barn. We played with all of the rules at first, but now we ignore the barn and use him for our scoring marker, actually each player has to cough up one meeple for the scoring track anyway, so I let each player decide for themselves, but usually we all dump the barn as it's a "single use" kind of thing anyway. Well, eventually you ARE GOING TO HAVE to get this, the orange "Super Unfudgie" tile (as we call it) can unlock your blocked meeple(s), and score you an extra 9 points. The Unfudgie has a Cloister within it, and if/when you deploy it AND if you have a meeple out you can score 9 extra points. This expansion is awesome, I give it 4 stars because it works great, brings in some newer tiles, some great new meeples, the cart is awesome too, and in general is an excellent addition to an otherwise excellent game. I don't recommend more that one of these, but if you're going to expand your Carcassonne, you can't go wrong with this one. The orange tile might cause you some trepidation at first but once you realize that it separates the 4 features it touches on all four sides your confusion will end.
Remember you can't UNFUDGIE yourself if you're not in the game!!!!
