Carcassonne: South Seas keeps the familiar tile-laying gameplay of the original Carcassonne, with players adding a tile to the playing area each round and optionally placing a token on the tile to claim ownership of...something. Instead of the familiar cities, roads and farms, however, players in Carcassonne: South Seas use their meeples to gather bananas, shellfish and fish, then ship those goods to traders in exchange for points.
Carcassonne: South Seas is the first game of a new series titled "Carcassonne Around the World".

I purpurchased this game not knowing a lot about it, but having heard a good word about game play. And the result was a total serendipity! What a great game! I love the original Carcassonne and also Hunters and gatherers, but had stopped collecting the other variations there. South Seas has cleverly added wares,I.e., bananas, fish, and shells that you obtain by completing bridges , islands, seas or markets. Well, what happens now? Also included are ship tokens, four are faceup throughout the game, each of which has ware tokens on them. If you have the correct wares on your turn you can deliver them to the ship and then collect that ship token. Each ship token has a number of victory points on its face ,and whoever has the most points at the end of the game wins. The heart of the game stays true to the Carcassonne concept, for example, you must complete an island or bridge, then take back your meeple. The addition of the wares and ship tokens brings a significant freshness to the game however. We've had several requests to bring the game along when we visit our gamer friends again. I can't think of a more engaging tile laying game or one I'd rather play. An excellent addition to any gamer's collection!
