Product Description

Is Friendship Stronger Than War? August 2, 1914 - In the main square of the village, a group of inseparable friends contemplate, incredulously, about a General Mobilization order posted on the town hall. For several weeks, reading the news had become troubling, but the brutal inevitability of this announcement surprised everyone. Without having the slightest idea of the devastation they were about to endure, they promised to stay together, to return - no matter what. Unfortunately, the reality that they were about to face would be completely beyond their worst fears. The Grizzled is a fast-paced, fully cooperative card game that takes place in the trenches of World War I.

So tense, so simple, so difficult, so good!!!
November 10, 2015

Another very hyped game to anyone who regularly listens to the board gaming podcasts out there. Part of the game's sad back story is that the cartoonist who did the artwork for The Grizzled, who drew under the name Tignous, was tragically killed in the terrorist attack at the Charlie Hebdo office earlier this year. This was one of his last works, and he did an amazing job capturing the horrible misery that is war. The game has a simple premise: you and your fellow players must survive WWI by completing various missions and providing support to one another. Losing is simple. Play three cards that each display the same threat (night, snow, rain, shell, gas mask, and raid whistle) and you lose. One of the players acquires 4 or more hard knock cards (basically wounds, but of the emotional and psychological kind) and you lose. Morale falls so far that you run out of cards and you lose. You must work with your fellow soldiers by laying down threat cards, giving morale boosting speeches, cashing in your good luck charms, or supporting the most war-weary of your group with a simple hot cup of joe at the end of a particularly nasty mission.

I know it sounds gloomy and depressing, but I found it to be an invigorating challenge that somehow always leaves me feeling inspired. You see, at it's heart this is really a game about humanity and doing whatever you can to survive a terrible, terrible situation together. This is a great collaborative game. More than a filler for sure. Great theme, very immersive; the tension never lets up! Worth taking a look.
