Product Description

Another Reiner Knizia standby, this game plays very well with varying numbers of people. The object is to accrue the most points during three rounds, which you do by spending your points to bid on sets of cards.

Each turn the current player turns up one to three cards for all the players to bid on, with the highest bid taking all cards. The cards denote a commodity type and quantity/value. The round ends when each player's ships are full, or the commodity card deck is exhausted. After each round, points are awarded to each player having the most of a given commodity, and to the one with the most valuable total "cargo load".

Simple rules, agonizing decisions and quick play
January 15, 2008

Medici is a very simple auction game that is designed in such a way to make many of the decisions very difficult. After one player makes a bid, you will often hear the next player groan as they are faced with whether to bid higher or pass.

The rules are simple... 1, 2 or 3 tiles (lots) are up for bid and there are 5 different items (eg. spices, furs, etc.). Each tile has a different value on it as well 0-5. You can put up to 5 tiles (lots) on your ship. You do this for 3 days and score at the end of each day. Score points for having high numbers on your ship (total value of the tiles) and score points for buying more of one type of item than the others. Bonuses are also awarded once you have bought a lot of one type of item (eg. grains).

That's the quick version of the rules, but the long version isn't much longer. I've played Knizia's game Ra and it is one of my favorites. Medici is a different game but it is also similar in that it plays fast and provides a lot of information related to the auctions along with tough decisions. I'm certain this one will see the table many times in my home.

Don't miss out on Medici because everyone is talking about Knizia's other auction games (Ra, Modern Art, Hollywood Blockbuster). I like them all, but Medici is the second best of these four in my opinion (right behind Ra).

Awesome Knizia game!
January 08, 2006
This is a 10 year old game which I have found, very few gamers know about. That makes it extra special -- it is an excellent gem, which has been sitting under your nose all these years...)

Its a simple 30 minute bidding game, hehe... as are most of the games Knizia's games. I've played many many, Knizia games and many more bidding games and this is one of my favorites. But, unlike Tom Vasel, I don't fall in love with every game I play. I am very picky, so trust me, this is a Must Buy!

Other games also on my Must Buy list:
High Society - Knizia game which is even better than For Sale
Kingdoms - also by Knizia
Magellan - Wonderful bidding game
I'm the Boss - Another amazing gem, by the designer of Acquire, which no one seems to know about
Caylus - Its a good game. As good as Puerto Rico, you ask? Time will tell.

These are all great games. With the exception of Caylus and Kingdoms, they are not well-known. I recommend you run, don't walk and pickup a copy of these unknown gems!

Fun bidding game, but not addictive
January 13, 2005
We had lot of fun playing Medici the other night. It fosters involvement of all players, and everybody has a chance to win even late in the game. But, I am not sure it would keep me interested again and again. The rules are quite simple and there are probably not so many winning strategies. Good for occasional playing, but not addictive as some other games.
