This game can bog down and take a long time if the basic rules are used. The expansion rules for tournament play help speed up the game into a 5 to 7 hour game MAX. It is NOT a German style game in time length--then again it doesn't claim to be. The only empire building/war style game that fits this category is Vinci.
Twilight Imperium has been described by some as a mixture of Axis and Allies, Settlers of Catan and Junta. It succesfully combines empire building, politics, and combat into one package that is very enjoyable. Rules are simple and the play is straightforward. Combat is fast with lots of die rolling, and the map is always constructed differently each game. The political phase allows players to vote on an agenda using their influence to their advantage. Plenty of interesting elements, variation, and simple mechanics makes this a very enjoyable and re-playable strategy game.
In my opinion, this is one of the best 'Empire building' games out there, and one that doesn't bog down. An entire game can be played in one sitting.
In this game, play begins with each player selecting a race of space-explorers out to re-establish the Empire that has collapsed. The board is made up of large-ish hex tiles that are randomly dealt and placed by each player in turn until the galaxy is 'built'. Each player then begins expanding their empire by allocating resources to research or production and establishing political clout and economic power with other races.
The game really heats up when you finally get a good sized armada and are bearing down on your hapless foes. That's when tactical skills as well as political savvy really pay off.
What I like best about this game is very simple combat rules combined with a high degree of strategy in fleet deployment with the added benefit of
Playing time can be longish (2-4 hours) but it's fairly fast paced once you learn the rules.
Good art work and construction, and the expansion plastic pieces look like fun too.
It could be a 5 star game if it had more expansions (and maybe there will be).
