The story of the monk republic of Athos in northern Greece began around the year 700, when numerous hermits moved to the inhospitable mountain peninsula. Famous rock monasteries developed, which until recently had been accessible only with great difficulty.
In order to train their thinking in the seclusion of the mountain monasteries, a game was created, which imparted a certain composure of thought: the necessity for advance planning to consider the behavior of others with their own considerations and the insight that overbearing dominance causes resistances.
The winner is the first player to bring his three monks through the mountain passes to Athos. During your turn, you have two phases. In the first, you divide six moves as you wish among your three monks. In the second, you use barriers to block the paths of the other players. Note, however, that no barrier may block the last entrance to the mountain of Athos -- an accessible path must remain. Barriers may neither be entered nor jumped over, but you can eliminate them if you give up four of your six moves during a turn.
Twice during the game, each player can use his "Athos stones": With them, a barrier can be shifted and another space made unchangeable. With this, you can secure an empty space in path to the goal or put an immovable barrier in the way of others.
Athos is a refined thinking game with a distinctive layout. The rules are simple, but the possibilities of the game are complex. You can pursue different strategies and make surprising moves, which give the game a new twist.
